Introduction to the module
The aim of this module is to help pupils understand the origin of meats and associated assurance schemes.
Key learning from this module
- Where and how red meat is reared in Wales (see also Sustainable Farming)
- How to prove its origin and understand more about the traceability of meat.
- Learn about food assurance schemes that are in place to guarantee quality, food safety, high animal welfare and full traceability.

Suggested classroom activities
- View the Provenance of red meat powerpoint then;
- Ask the pupils to look at various food packaging – what information can we find on the packaging – in particular re origin of product or ingredients and the food assurance scheme logos on the product.
- Discuss is food origin important to pupils?
- Use the Provenance worksheet to look at the Welsh Beef stir fry with blackbean and plum sauce recipe – where do the ingredients come from?
- Practical activity – prepare and cook the Welsh Beef stir fry recipe.
- Complete the Eatwell worksheet relating to the recipe.
